Trend + Usage Patterns of Public Spaces from Aggregated Datasets

Project Vibe supports the Trust for Public Land (TPL) in its mission to ensure easy access to public green space to promote healthy, livable communities. Using anonymized cell phone location data of park visitors, Project Vibe allows urban designers, municipalities, and other stakeholders to closely study the nuances of how park developments are utilized by surrounding communities to make future investments in park infrastructure more efficient and effective.

Measuring the Impact of Urban Development

Project Vibe combines cutting-edge data sets and web technologies to provide insight into the nuances of how the urban environment is utilized by communities.

Traditionally, measuring techniques have been limited to manual, labor-intensive surveys that cannot fully capture the cultural, social, and physical impacts of the $1.2 trillion dollars of construction and urban development activities taking shape each year in the U.S. alone.

Quickly Revealing Patterns of Park Use

Project Vibe uses aggregated mobile location data to deliver powerful methods of measuring social and physical impacts of development projects. The data sets are available in near real-time and can also be recalled for any date-range dating back to January 2014. Users can quickly filter, clip, trim, and process the data to look deeply at a wide range of urban patterns.

Driving Results

My team was interested in solving the issue of scaling the measurement of park use for all parks nationwide. Our goal was to pilot the use of several anonymized cell phone data products for insights into park use. The idea was novel at the time and very few organizations were thinking about using cutting-edge data like anonymized cell phone data for mission or programmatic issues.

“The product that the RS21 team developed is simple yet powerful. I personally demonstrated the live application to audiences big and small nationally and it was apparent how impressed and awestruck they were. The presentation of the data was delivered in such a creative and thoughtful way. The RS21 team is expert in translating big data into products that tell a story, spark questions and insights, and solve problems. To this day, the VIBE web application is still being used to convey information about park usage in the United States. I highly recommend RS21 as a superior consulting partner.
