Understanding Smart Meter Technology to Improve Power + Communications Grid Resiliency
RS21 developed CoViz (LLNL-MI-813334) in partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) as a clickable prototype, and blueprint for software application development, that helps scientists and utilities better understand the implications of smart meter technology and how it can be used to improve power and communications grid resiliency.
Smart Meters
Smart meters are electronic devices that record grid information such as energy consumption, voltage and current levels.
This data enables providers to monitor their system and plan emergency response scenarios. To send this important data to utilities, smart meters rely on the communication grid.
Visualizing A Co-Simulation Framework
To improve grid resiliency and better understand the interdependencies between power and communications systems, scientists at LLNL are modeling the network using a co-simulation framework called HELICS.
CoViz visualizes HELICS simulation results, enabling scientists to intuitively explore the system interdependencies and identify anomalies.
Permissions Management + Enhanced Security
To control and regulate access, CoViz employs user-level permissions as well as role permissions—differentiating between administrative and general user functions, for example.
